Compare the2025 Honda Civic Type RVS 2025 Genesis G70

For enhanced safety, the front and rear seat shoulder belts of the Honda Civic Type R have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The Genesis G70 doesn’t offer pretensioners for its rear seat belts.

The Honda Civic Type R has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The G70 doesn’t offer a front passenger side knee airbag.

Using vehicle speed sensors and seat sensors, smart airbags in the Civic Type R deploy with different levels of force or don’t deploy at all to help better protect passengers of all sizes in different collisions. The Civic Type R’s side airbags will shut off if a child is leaning against the door. The G70’s side airbags don’t have smart features and will always deploy full force.

Both the Civic Type R and the G70 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

The Honda Civic Type R has achieved the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) highest rating of “Top Safety Pick Plus” for the 2025 model year. This distinction is based on its exceptional performance in IIHS’ rigorous battery of safety tests. Specifically, it earned a “Good” rating in the latest, more stringent moderate overlap front crash test, a “Good” result in the updated side impact test, and an “Acceptable” score in the revised pedestrian crash prevention test. The G70 has not yet been fully evaluated by the IIHS for 2025.

There are over 4 times as many Honda dealers as there are Genesis dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Civic Type R’s warranty.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Honda vehicles are better in initial quality than Genesis vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Honda above average in initial quality. With 3 more problems per 100 vehicles, Genesis is rated lower.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2025 Auto Issue reports that Honda vehicles are more reliable than Genesis vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Honda fourth in overall reliability. Genesis is ranked 14th.

The Civic Type R’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder produces 15 more horsepower (315 vs. 300) than the G70 2.5T’s standard 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder.

On the EPA test cycle the Civic Type R gets better mileage than the G70:

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Honda Civic Type R uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended for maximum performance). The G70 2.5T requires premium, which can cost on average about 84.9 cents more per gallon.

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Honda Civic Type R higher (5 out of 10) than the Genesis G70 (4 to 5). This means the Civic Type R produces up to 5.2 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the G70 every 15,000 miles.

The Civic Type R offers a manual transmission for better acceleration, control and sportiness. The G70 doesn’t offer a manual transmission.

The Civic Type R stops much shorter than the G70:

For better traction, the Civic Type R has larger tires than the G70 (265/30R19 vs. 225/40R19).

The Civic Type R’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 30 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the G70’s standard 40 series front and 35 series rear tires.

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Civic Type R is 1.2 inches wider in the front and .4 inches wider in the rear than on the G70.

The Civic Type R Touring handles at 1.03 G’s, while the G70 Sport Prestige AWD pulls only .88 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Civic Type R Touring executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.7 seconds quicker than the G70 Sport Prestige AWD (24.5 seconds @ .76 average G’s vs. 26.2 seconds @ .69 average G’s).

The Honda Civic Type R may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 500 to 850 pounds less than the Genesis G70.

The Civic Type R is 3.5 inches shorter than the G70, making the Civic Type R easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the EPA rates the Civic Type R a Large car, while the G70 is rated a Compact.

The Civic Type R has 3.1 cubic feet more passenger volume than the G70 (99 vs. 95.9).

The Civic Type R has .7 inches more front shoulder room, 2.6 inches more rear legroom and 1.4 inches more rear shoulder room than the G70.

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that Honda service is better than Genesis. J.D. Power ranks Honda 7th in service department satisfaction (above the industry average). With a 47% lower rating, Genesis is ranked 29th.

The Civic Type R’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The G70 does not have an oil pressure gauge.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Civic Type R has a standard rear wiper. The G70 doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Honda Civic Type R has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Only the G70 Advanced/Sport Prestige offers wireless charging.

The Civic Type R will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Civic Type R will retain 59.77% of its original price after five years, while the G70 only retains 49.24% to 51.02%.

The Civic was chosen as a Car and Driver’s “Top Ten” for 2025 and 10 more times in the last 41 years. The G70 hasn’t been picked since 2019, and the G70 has only been chosen once.

A group of representative automotive journalists from North America selected the Civic as the 2025 North American Car of the Year. The G70 was last chosen in 2019.
